Travellers, students, digital nomads, people looking for work and anyone buying or selling on Leboncoin or Vinted all hit the same wall: French services want a French number. WhatsApp rejects most free virtual numbers, the tax portal texts a code you never receive, and a hotel or employer cannot call you back on an overseas line.
A temporary France number is a real French mobile number, not a VOIP line, and it takes calls and SMS exactly like a local one. No French address required. It works across Europe and the United Kingdom. Buy it now and start it later — you have up to 12 months to activate, and your 15 or 30 days only begin when you do.
Temporary France Number eSIMs
2 eSIMs are better than one. When travelling, turn off your Primary SIM to save and grab a Europe Number eSIM for around 1 euro a day. Explore our Europe Network Carriers. Check our Help articles for ways to use your eSIM — and did we tell you it was easy!
Every one of these stops working without a French number.
Verifying WhatsApp
Free virtual numbers get rejected. A real mobile line does not.
No French address
You do not have to live in France, or prove that you do.
Buying on Leboncoin
Sellers will not deal with a number they cannot ring.
Selling on Vinted
Buyers verify by SMS before they complete the sale.
Looking for work
Registration and employers both call back on a French line.
Students and CAF
Enrolment and benefit portals send their codes by SMS.
The tax portal
impots.gouv.fr texts a code before it lets you in.
Doctor appointments
Doctolib confirms and reminds you by SMS.
Travelling to France
Hotels, drivers and restaurants ring the number you gave them.
How long it lasts
Plan length, the 12-month window, and what happens when it ends.
Choosing a provider
What separates a real mobile line from a shared virtual one.
Worth knowing before you buy, not after.
You cannot ring outside Europe
Outgoing calls and texts only reach numbers within the European destinations we cover. Dialling Australia, the United States or anywhere outside that list will not connect. Incoming calls and texts from anywhere still reach you.
It is not for your bank
Banks and finance apps treat a change of registered number as a security event, and a new number can trigger account locks. Keep your bank on your home number.
It does not include data
These are number-only plans: calls and SMS, no data allowance. If you need data as well, our eSIM plans with data include both.
It is not permanent
The number works only for the days in your plan — 15 or 30 — then it stops and cannot be restarted. The 12 months from purchase is a window to activate, not extra time on the number. It later returns to the operator pool, as every French number does.
It does not renew
The longest plan is currently 30 days, and plans cannot be extended. If you need longer you buy again, and you get a different number. Choose the duration you need up front.
It is not a French address
You do not need a French address to buy one, but it does not give you one either. Anything requiring proof of residence still will.
It will not work on every phone
It is an eSIM, so your phone must be eSIM-capable and unlocked. There is no physical SIM to post. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears alongside your IMEI, you are eSIM-ready.
